Peñiscola (MOD)

Peñíscola is one of the most beautiful municipalities in the province of Castellón, located in the north of the Valencian Community and one of the most touristic towns.

At the top of a hill is Castillo de Peñíscola, which was the place of residence of Pope Luna, who was one of the most controversial fathers of the Catholic Church. This castle was built by the Knights Templar of a powerful Catholic military order. It became the holy see during Luna's papacy, although between the 14th and 15th centuries, these were very troubled times for the church because there were up to three popes simultaneously.

This municipality has many shops located in the old town next to the castle and within its narrow stone streets.

Its five long stretches of fine sand make it an important beach in Peñíscola and one of the best, highlighting its facilities for people with reduced mobility.

In the sixth season of the Game of Thrones series, the Fosc Portal is one of the settings chosen for filming.

Entrance through the part of the Port where you enter to visit Peñíscola, the entrance is walled with two medium-height towers and a very beautiful ogival entrance with the coat of arms of Papa Luna, from here you go up a good slope to visit the entire fortification.

One of the most peculiar corners of Peñíscola is its well-known Casa de las Conchas. This building is one of the symbols of the city and is located in the old town, between narrow cobbled streets. As its name indicates, the first thing that stands out when seeing it is its façade completely covered in shells.

The Peñíscola Lighthouse is located within the urban area, under the castle of Papa Luna and was inaugurated in 1899.
